ECB Is Getting Practical About the Digital Euro — Starting With ATMs

For a long time, the whole “digital euro” idea felt pretty abstract. Lots of policy talk, not much about how people would actually use it.

Now the European Central Bank is getting into the details that matter — like what happens when you walk into a store or use an ATM.

The bank is looking for experts to help figure out exactly how a digital euro would work in everyday situations, especially at payment terminals and cash machines.

Instead of debating if a digital euro should exist, this step is about how it would function if it does.

There are two main areas they’re focusing on.

First, the technical side:

How a payment terminal processes a digital euro transaction
Whether you could pay without internet (offline mode)

Basically, they want it to feel no different from tapping your card.

It’s still not a done deal

Important point: the digital euro hasn’t been approved yet.

The ECB has done most of the technical prep, but now it’s in the hands of politicians — the European Parliament and Council — plus a final decision from the central bank itself.

ECB President Christine Lagarde has already hinted they’re ready on their side. If everything lines up, a launch could happen around 2029.

That’s still a few years away.

Meanwhile, banks are moving faster

While all this is being discussed, private banks aren’t sitting around.

A group including BBVA, ING and BNP Paribas is working on something similar — a euro-backed stablecoin under the Qivalis project, possibly launching in 2026.

So you’ve got two tracks forming:

A government-backed digital euro (slower, more regulated)
A private stablecoin version (faster, market-driven)

Whichever one gets traction first could shape how digital payments evolve in Europe.

This might sound like behind-the-scenes stuff — and it is — but it’s also a signal.

The ECB isn’t just exploring ideas anymore. It’s preparing for real-world usage:

handling payments even without a connection
