Elon Musk is getting more serious about turning X into a financial platform — and the latest hire makes that pretty clear.

The company just brought in Benji Taylor as head of design, someone who’s spent years building crypto products, wallets, and on-chain user experiences.

That’s not a random pickup.

A Designer With Actual Crypto Background

Taylor isn’t just “crypto-adjacent.”

He built Family, a self-custody wallet that gained real traction before being acquired by Aave. After that, he stayed on as a product lead, and more recently worked on Base — Coinbase’s blockchain network.

So his background is very specific: wallets, UX, and making crypto products usable.

Which is exactly the hard part.

Timing Matters Here

The hire comes as X gets closer to launching its payments push — what Musk has been calling “X Money.”

The plan, at least for now, looks pretty straightforward:

Peer-to-peer payments
Bank transfers
A debit card
Cashback rewards

All rolling out across much of the U.S., potentially as soon as April.

On paper, that sounds more like a fintech app than a crypto product.

But bringing in someone like Taylor suggests there might be more going on under the surface.

Not Officially Crypto… But Feels Close

So far, X hasn’t said anything about blockchain being part of X Money.

No tokens, no on-chain rails, nothing explicit.

But it’s hard to ignore the direction.

You don’t hire someone who built self-custody wallets and worked on Base just to design a basic payments app.

At minimum, it suggests X is thinking beyond traditional fintech — even if it’s not ready to say that publicly yet.

Musk’s Bigger Play

Zoom out, and this fits into a broader idea Musk has been hinting at for a while.

X isn’t just supposed to be a social platform. It’s meant to become an “everything app” — messaging, content, payments, maybe more.

Payments are the first real step toward that.

And design matters a lot here. If you’re trying to get millions of users to move money inside a social app, the experience has to be seamless.

That’s where someone like Taylor comes in.

Still Early — But Direction Is Clear

We still don’t know exactly what X Money will look like once it launches.

The crypto angle might stay in the background. Or it might show up later.

But the signal is there.

X is hiring people who understand wallets, ownership, and financial UX — not just traditional payments.

And that usually points in one direction.
